Lights, Camera, Arrest: Robert Stolarik

Resource August 7, 2012 IMAGE MAKERS

By Janet Alexander –

So, what did you do this weekend? Whatever it may have been, it’s unlikely it was as eventful as the weekend Robert Stolarik had.

Robert Stolarik

This veteran New York Times freelance photographer was arrested this saturday while taking photographs in the Concourse neighborhood. He’d happened upon a street fight, and began photographing the arrest of a teenage girl, when a police officer asked him to stop. After identifying himself as a journalist for the Times, Stolarik resumed, but was quickly accosted by a second police officer who grabbed his camera.

Stolarik was dragged to the ground, and his cameras were confiscated after requesting the officers’ badge numbers. Stolarik was apprehended for obstructing government administration and resisting arrest. He was released from jail at 4:40 a.m. sunday morning, and immediately checked himself into a hospital for X-rays. Luckily, the only thing that had been broken was his camera. Stolarik is scheduled to appear in court this November.
