The man, the myth, the legend: Eugene Smith

Anyone who is a fan of photojournalism, or just great photography that documents our daily lives, will want to attend this year’s W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography. The Grant is given to photographers who escape from the increasingly formulaic demands of the mass media, and in so doing, pay tribute to the legacy of Eugene Smith. Gene Smith was a loner, a driving and driven man, who bucked the system of which he was a part. Some say he sacrificed his career, and himself, on an altar of self-destructive idealism. When he died at the age of 59 in 1978, he had $18 in the bank. But his name had become synonymous with integrity. His work was his memorial.

The School of Visual Arts Theater in New York City will be hosting this year’s awards on October 17th.  The evening is filled with incredible photography and presentations from some of the most respected journalists in the business today, including a keynote speech by Kimberly Dozier, an AP correspondent and author of Breaking the Fire. The W. Eugene Smith Fund has extended an open invitation to attend the event and there is no fee. You can rsvp at the event webpage: http://smithfund.org/announcements/attend-the-smith-grant-ceremony
