Along side the D7200 announcement tonight, Nikon quietly also announced a new wireless lavalier microphone: the ME-W1. It’s a weather resistant little bluetooth microphone powered by two AAA batteries that can wirelessly record audio in mono or stereo (when connected to the ME-1 stereo microphone) from up to 164 feet (50 meters) away.

This is a curious addition to the lineup, as we generally don’t think of Nikon as a sound company, but the implications of the device are intriguing. We’re interested in testing it out against some of the other wireless lav microphone options on the market. If nothing else, it’s an excellent option for someone just starting out in video.
