The traveling couple Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger are plotting the distance they’ve wandered through a very interesting and engaging Instagram series. “Our theme for our journey is ‘How Far From Home’ – to see how far we can actually get,” says Chanel Cartell (@howfarfromhome). Recently quitting their jobs and escaping from their familiar environment in Johannesburg, South Africa, the couple are now looking forward to the new challenges of the road without the beckoning of their comfort zone. “We quit our jobs in the creative field of advertising, sold all of our belongings and packed up our world into four bags – two filled with camera gear, of course,” says Chanel, adding, “We were no longer feeling challenged; we needed something that would charge the electrolytes running through our veins.”
Thus along with the new life of travel came an idea of documenting their trip. Taking photographs of them foregrounding amazing landscape and impressive architecture indoors, they accompany each image with the distance of kilometers away from home scribbled down on a piece of small cardboard.
Setting off from kilometer zero, Stevo and Chanel bid their city Johannesburg goodbye and started their round-the-world journey. Backpacks on their back, a sense of adventure in their mind and a ‘wanderlust’ driven soul, the two have now came as far as 9,000 plus kilometers away from home and with many more countries and beautiful destinations on their list, their growing list of followers on Instagram are looking forward to how far the couple will reach.
At this moment they have ticked off quite a few from their ‘wanderlist’ but a lot of interesting experiences still remains. “We encourage fellow travelers and community members to send us challenges that we can add to the wanderlist,” says Chanel. “I think our favorite – or the one we’ll save for last – is to make it to Hawaii, quite literally the furthest point from home.”
The couple didn’t just decided on an impulse to leave their life behind and go on an journey of a lifetime. They proudly narrate how they planned for this undertaking for months, studying methods of traveling without the support of a steady monthly income. “We came across Workaway, which allows nomads the opportunity to visit and stay in a foreign place, whilst working four to five hours per day on a number of tasks, in exchange for accommodation and food. With our passion lying in photography, outdoor adventures and dogs, we’ve secured three Workaway hosts with whom we will be staying – a husky farm in the Arctic Circle, a Swedish campsite surrounded by forests and lakes and an Italian dog training facility near Florence.”
That my friends is how to put a plan in motion. In this case, both Stevo and Chanel didn’t just move away from home, they also kick started the kind of life they always desire of living. Out on the road, far from home while amassing thousands of kilometers and boundless of memorable experiences on the road.
