Well, we asked and Panasonic finally delivered. You can now acquire the Lumix GH4 V-Log L Function firmware upgrade kit for your GH4, but it isn’t the free upgrade we were hoping for. Sadly, you’ll have to dole out $99 to grab it.
So what does it do? Well, this:
- LUMIX GH4 function enhancement for film production/professional videographers
- Increases dynamic range from 10 stops to 12 stops
- Makes color grading easier with improved compatibility between LUMIX GH4 and Panasonic Varicam
- V-Log / V-Log L were developed to feature similar characteristic to Cineon
When you buy it, you get an activation code which will allow you to use the V-Log functionality. So why does it cost $99? Likely because Panasonic had to expend considerable resources building Log funtionality. Unlike with Sony cameras, where Log comes built in to even the RX100 Mark IV, Panasonic didn’t really have a Log format until now. Sony had the benefit of developing it a while ago for their high-end cameras and they simply ported that to the rest of their lineup.
Whatever the case may be, this is a huge deal for Panasonic shooters. $99 is hardly a high asking price for more dynamic range and color-grade-friendly footage.
