Canon Australia brought six different photographers in to shoot portraits on the same man for their new series, THE LAB, but there was a twist. For each photographer, Canon invented a different backstory for the man being photographed, ranging from self-made millionaire to ex-convict. The resulting portraits each capture a very different personality, which Canon cleverly sums up with the tagline, “No one sees it like you.” While the idea behind the sentiment is undoubtedly true, this creative advertisement more accurately points at the fact that just like everyone else, photographers bring their own pre-conceived notions and stereotypes to their work. Is this experiment really showing that each photographer’s perspective is unique, or is it just proving that photographers should keep an open mind when portraying their subjects instead of relying on preconceived notions? Either way, the final six portraits are a fascinating comparison.
