Have you ever dreamed about having your very own private photo exhibition? Well, the wait is over, because Sketchfab, a platform claiming to “build for 3D content what YouTube did for video,” recently released Instamuseum, an app that turns your Instagram pictures into a virtual museum.
And it’s fairly easy to create your own Instamuseum – or someone else’s, for that matter. Just go to instamuseum.com, select an environment, create a Sketchfab account (or sign in, should you already have one), and simply wait a few minutes for the museum to appear.
However, that’s not the end of it. If you have a VR headset or a Cardboard VR viewer, you can click the VR-icon on the low right of your gallery, and enjoy your Instamuseum in full, immersive 3D. “When Sylvain Zimmer came to us with an idea to automagically convert Instagram VR galleries into 3D environments, we were game,” Scetchfab writes in its blog.
Since there are – for now – only four virtual spaces you can organize your gallery in (The Louvre, Art Gallery, Wall and Cube) and a maximum display of 12 pictures, your expectations shouldn’t be all to high. Furthermore, 3D is not yet possible for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. And if you are something of an enthusiastic desktop visitor, you rather easily end up on the wrong side of the museum walls.
But it’s a fun new application. And Sketchfab pioneers by merging social media with 3D and VR. So here’s a few already existing Instamuseums for you to discover.
