The trailer for the new film “Unsane” has just been released, and if the movie doesn’t look intriguing enough based on plot alone, maybe the fact that it was shot entirely on an iPhone will pique your interest.

This isn’t the first radical creative endeavor for director Steven Soderbergh; he recently collaborated with HBO on their interactive mystery series Mosaic, which allows viewers to participate in the story-telling through an app. Now he’s just released the first look at his new movie, which he shot with nothing other than a regular ol’ iPhone.

“Unsane” which stars The Crown‘s Claire Foy—in addition to other big names like Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, and Amy Irving—tells the story of a woman who is the victim of stalking. After being involuntarily coerced into checking in as a patient to a mental institution, she begins to unravel as the lines between reality and illusion blur for both herself and the audience. The trailer features cinematography with a relatively low-fi aesthetic which fits the bleak and eerie mood of the film’s premise, but had you not known the entire picture was shot on an iPhone, it would be virtually impossible to tell.

During an interview with IndieWire at the 2018 Sundance film festival, Soderburgh said, “Anybody going to see this movie who has no idea of the backstory to the production will have no idea this was shot on the phone. That’s not part of the conceit.”

Soderbergh goes so far as to suggest that filming with a phone may be where the future of cinematic story-telling is headed. While he isn’t the first to do so—Sean Baker’s notable film “Tangerine” was also shot entirely on an iPhone back in 2015—Soderbergh’s status suggests that the trend may be catching on with Hollywood’s higher-ups.

The movie will premiere at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival, and will then be released to theaters on March 23rd.
