A Photo Editor interviewed Dan Winters, one of the most sought-after editorial photographers in the world. Dan says that in 26 years of work he’s never not been busy (don’t hate him because he’s successful!). He recommends to be always working toward your goals and to keep focused and passionate about what you do.
Dan first got his taste of photography when he was in a 4-H club (a youth development organization); his instructor there had been a military photographer. In college, one of Dan’s teachers, John Gray, had studied under the founders of the New Bauhaus School in Chicago. Dan later went to Munich to study at the University of Munich film department–tuitions there were free. He was interested in photojournalism and documentary photography and started shooting some freelance stuff for the “Deutsche Zeitung”. He eventually came back to America (having not finished school) and was soon hired by a local paper.
