The 33rd annual Dakar Rally, an off-road race for cars, motorcycles, and trucks, crowned champions from France, the Netherlands, and Argentina this year. Amateur and professional drivers from across the world have been participating in the Dakar since its inception in 1979. Originally, the course for the rally was between Paris, France and Dakar, Senegal, but due to many security concerns, the course has been changed to include other cities in Europe and South America. This year, the drivers trekked a course through Argentina, Chile, and Peru; the course started in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina and ended in Lima, Peru. The 2 week rally takes place in stages with drivers going roughly between 500-550 miles per day over a wide range of terrain.
